School of English Studies (SES) evolved into the current framework from its predecessor, Office of English Teaching and Research, Zhejiang Institute of Education, founded in 1960.
Faculty and Research
At present, SES has a faculty of 51 members with high academic competence, abundant teaching experiences and fervent devotion to their work, including 44 teachers, 11 professors, 12 associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, 10 masters supervisors, 28 doctoral degree holders and 1 doctoral student. Besides, there are 2 foreign experts and 2 visiting professors at SES.
Among the teaching staff, 1 member is entitled to a Special Allowance by the State Council, 1 is appointed as commissioner on the English Language Teaching Advisory Subcommittee, the Foreign Languages and Literatures Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, 2 are nominated as vice chairmen on the Provincial College Foreign Languages and Literatures Teaching Advisory Board, 3 are qualified as talents of the second and third levels of the Provincial “151 Talent Project”, 3 are designated as provincial youth academic leaders and 1 is granted the funding by the provincial“Qianjiang C-class Talent Project”.
In the past three years, teachers of SES have published more than 30 works comprising monographs, translations and textbooks, translated 13 books for the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and contributed more than 80 papers to such renowned domestic and overseas journals asSemiotica,Foreign Language Teaching and Research,Journal ofChinese Language,Chinese Translators Journal, Journal ofForeign Languages, etc., of which many papers have been fully collected in the Data Bank of the Duplicated Materials from Newspapers and Periodicals by Renmin University of China.They have undertaken and completed 4 academic research projects funded by the National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science and 12 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects.
In recent years, SES has successfully hosted some academic conferences, like the 11th National Senior Forum for English Deans and Department Heads, the 10th National Conference of the Heads of Translation Schools and Departments, the 13th National Pragmatics Seminar and the 8th Annual Meeting of China Pragmatics Association, and China Senior Forum for Research into the Integration of Corpus Linguistics and Translation.
Programs and Disciplines
Currently, SES consists of three departments—Department of English, Department of Business English and Department of Translation and Interpretation, which offer three undergraduate programs, namely the English Language Program, the Business English Program and the Translation and Interpretation Program, to about 44 classes made up of 1,180 undergraduates including a number of international students studying at SES. And English-Chinese Bilingual Interpretation is endowed with the right to the“Trinity”Comprehensive Reform Pilot Enrollment.
Foreign Languages and Literatures is named as a provincial first-class discipline, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics a key discipline at colleges and universities in Zhejiang Province and English major an advantageous specialty at Universities in Zhejiang Province. SES houses four school-level academic research institutes—Institute of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Institute of Translation Studies, Institute of International Business Language and Culture, and Institute of Translation Education, coupled with a National Examination and Training Center for International Business English.
Talent Cultivation and Student Academic Competitions
Under the guidance of “foundation, practicality and specialty”in the development of the three majors , the undergraduate programs of SES aim to cultivate comprehensive English talents with a good command of English, a wide range of knowledge and a broad understanding of international affairs through the integration of classroom teaching and extra-curriculum activities. SES has been taking the initiative to develop students’ quality by means of the activities organized by English Speech and Debate Center, Cicero Interpreting Club, Business English Collaborative Innovation Team and Youth Entrepreneurship Studio, International Etiquette Training Center, Group Striving for Postgraduate Entrance Examination and the like, in addition to the Annual English Cultural Festival and the Pilot Class of International Comprehensive Talents.
SES has won many provincial honors and awards as well as wide social recognition thanks to its great efforts to carry out summer-based social practice and international volunteer services featuring the aspects of major-based studies.
In recent years, SES students have won over 40 prizes in various provincial and national contests and competitions, for example, the National English Speech Contest, the National Normal Students Skills Competition, Zhejiang Province English Speech Contest, Zhejiang Province Challenge Cup and Career Planning Competition.
Foreign Exchange and Student Employment
SES endeavors to develop international learning exchange programs, offering students a diversified choice of overseas learning experiences such as exchange programs, short-term overseas study programs and summer camps in collaborative universities of strategic partnerships in America, Germany, Canada, Britain, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other countries and regions. In addition, SES admits international students who study for degrees in the same classrooms together with their Chinese peers at ZISU.
SES graduates hit a record high of more than 97% in their employment rate for three consecutive years, mainly employed in foreign-funded enterprises, primary and secondary schools and training institutions. And a number of students are admitted to the graduate programs of many domestic and foreign universities for further studies every year.
